Home Instructions Before Oral Surgery

Please follow these instructions to prepare for oral surgery with IV Sedation.

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water, tea or coffee) for eight hours prior to the appointment.  Also no chewing gum and no candies.
  • No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home.  It is not acceptable for the patient to be dropped off and picked up.
  • MINORS must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
  • Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.  If acrylic nails are worn, please remove them from the index and middle fingers of right hand.
  • Do not wear contact lenses to your appointment.  If you must, please bring a proper container to place them in after removal.  Do not place the lenses in your eyes for 3-4 hours after surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or upset bowels, please notify the office.
  • PLAN AHEAD: You will need an ice bag when you return home. Also, be prepared by having liquids and/or soft foods (non-chewed ie. Mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, jello, pudding) to eat when you get home.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Nguyen prior to your surgical date for instruction
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or upset bowels, please notify the office.
  • Should it become necessary to cancel/ change your surgery date, notify our office at least 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, a cancellation fee will be assessed and added to your account balance.
